What are the steps in ADHD treatment for children?
ADHD treatment can depend a lot on the diagnosis and the symptoms displayed by people with ADHD. Even though the symptoms are listed generically for all people, they appear in varying degrees in each individual. The extent of effects of these symptoms can also vary for each individual and it can only be determined by conducting additional tests. The psychological tests can give a fair indication of the effects with the patients and the ADHD treatment will be based on these results. Every person will have ADHD treatment that is unique but will invariably include three aspects in the overall treatment procedure. These are – Behavioral training, Medication and recommendations for life style changes.
Behavioral Training: It is possible to minimize the effects of ADHD symptoms by regular and extended behavioral training. This is easier to be done on children who can be changed more easily than adults, so, it is important to diagnose ADHD at an early stage and start the treatment.
Behavioral training is also individualized and will ensure that all the areas of concern for that particular individual are covered. Behavioral training will need to be imparted parents of the children and must also be periodically supervised by the experts. So, parents must be willing to be patient and perseverant with their wards for the success of this training.
Medication: Medication is also given as a part of ADHD treatment. The medication is also individualized as per the symptoms and requirements of the children. They can include stimulants to increase energy levels and decrease lethargy or can include depressants to decrease hyperactive tendencies. The problem with medication is that they can have adverse effects on the growth of the children and can also cause psychological problems. Doctors are aware of it and regulate the doses and they also ensure that medication is prescribed only if it is absolutely needed. Parents must also ensure that they follow the prescription and not resort to self medication or over indulgence.
Life style changes: Based on the diagnosis, Doctors can also recommend certain changes in the life styles of the children and also the parents. These are necessary for the overall success of the behavioral therapy. They can also make the children more disciplined and organized in their lives. ADHD is an ailment that does not have a permanent cure; it can only be controlled. It is therefore important to make these life style changes as recommended by the Doctors, for the overall well being of the children and also for the betterment of their lives.
